Thinking of buying your next new car online???

Once you've decided which new car you want to buy (use our manufacturers guides to help you choose), you obviously want to seek out the best deal possible.

But the very act of trying to find the cheapest possible price can leave you open to finding some of the more unscrupulous car suppliers!

Fortunately most of the really bad ones have been weeded out over the years so that stories about people losing money or not receiving the car have dwindled considerably.
But it is still important to completely satisfy yourself about any particular deal before going ahead - choosing the cheapest price will not always work out the best deal for you!



What to do:

Step One: Research.
Visit various websites to ascertain the approximate price for the car you are looking to buy. If one is considerably cheaper than the rest then be very wary as most suppliers can achieve similar discounts and shouldn't really vary that much! You may have found a bargain but check carefully for any hidden charges or clauses in the small print. Telephoning the supplier and asking questions will generally leave you with either a good or a bad impression on the company.

Step Two: Research again!
This time you are doing a bit research on the supplier - simply typing the supplier into Google along with words such as 'complaint' or 'problem' or 'concern' etc will bring up some interesting info if they do regularly cause problems for customers.

Step Three: Know your rights!
The Sale Of Goods Act applies to cars as well as everything else of course!
The Credit Consumer Act provides virtually full cover if you pay the initial deposit by credit card, regardless of how the balance is paid (check with your local Trading Standards department about this though as credit card companies are trying to get that changed) (NB - only applies if both the deposit and balance go to the same supplying company - ask before dealing!)
As you are not buying 'face-to-face' you are automatically protected under the Distant Selling Directive which basically gives you the right to cancel at any time and even to return the car within 7 days. The supplier is only allowed to charge a reasonable amount for expenses incurred or any damage caused.

If in any doubt just ask, ask, ask any questions you like - genuine suppliers will expect genuine customers to have concerns and won't mind answering any questions you may have!
