Transferring Car Number Plates
(Added Note to this article: Some internet car deals involve V5 retention for a certain period - this means you cannot put another number plate on the car meantime until you have posession of the V5) If you are purchasing a private plate through a recognised DVLA registered company then they will take care of all the paperwork for you. However it is not a difficult thing to do yourself and you will find simplified details of how to do it in the following article. For example, say that there is a number plate you wish to buy from a neighbour near you - perhaps it's a letter and number combination which has no significance to him but means something to you and you'd really like to have it on your car. Let's assume that you have negotiated a price and are buying it for £250 and you have agreed to cover all the other costs involved and organise the paperwork. Firstly: Please check that the transaction is allowed as follows. 1/ The two cars involved must both be mot'd and taxed and the V5 documents must be available for both cars. (there are exceptions to this but this is the most straightforward way) 2/ The car receiving the reg number must not be older than the reg number - for example if the reg number is a 'T' plate then it can't be put onto a car which has an S plate or older reg. This is because you are not allowed to make the car look newer than it is. But you can put it on any car equal in age or newer - eg a T plate, V plate, W,X,Y,51,52,etc. Next step is to obtain from your local DVLA office or dowload from the DVLA website the form V317 and both fill it in and sign it. You then send it off with the payment (currently £80) and both V5 documents. After a few weeks the DVLA will issue replacement V5's and Tax Discs and instruct you to obtain new number plates for each car. The owner of the original number plate will have been given a new one with the same 'age' on it - ie. if it was a 'T' plate then it will have a replacement T reg. You will need to find a local maker for number plates and take in the V5's to let them make up the new plates - usually about £30 per pair. That's it!
